Kids Helping Kids - Pure Water for the World
Posted by Tony Gilmore
"It's pretty amazing what people do for others!" - an excerpt from a letter Pure Water received from Jordan Hutchins, age 10, a student at St. John's Lutheran School in Dover, Delaware. Jordan's letter was one of many PWW received from St. John's School. The kids' principal Dina Vendetti, used Pure Water's project in Haiti to have the kids learn about the country, its people and as a fund raiser .
To get an idea of the flavor of the country, the children had a Haitian meal, learned about the Haitian school they had adopted, and studied health and water issues in Haiti. Through this process, they felt great compassion and a need to help their fellow schoolmates in Haiti.
Dina writes," The kids did an absolutely fantastic job of bringing in donations - several of them talked about emptying their piggy banks for the school in Haiti and many handed over money that had been sent to them in Valentine cards. we received donations from some members of our community, the Chamber of Commerce, and other friends. Grandparents, parents, and other relatives from out of town sent in checks and the project was a total success. It is with great pride and pleasure that I am inclosing a check totaling $4615. As a result of projects like these, our children are growing up with the distinct impression that they can have a positive influence on our world - they believe that their efforts will really make a difference. What a better world this would be if everyone grew up clinging to that belief! Thank you for the opportunity to teach this life lesson to our kids."
With Dina's help, Pure Water has started a program called "Kids Helping Kids" - a project where children can adopt schools in Haiti, and learn about that country while raising funds. Pure Water has created an instructional packet for teachers or Interact/ Early Act leaders to use as a guide for this program. The packet contains: facts on water and Haiti, good basic hygiene, Haitian recipes, academic ideas for grades K-12, and activities for all. If you or your organization would like to be involved with "Kids Helping Kids", please contact info@purewaterfortheworld.org for information.
